Alaska Real Estate Commission

The state body that licenses and disciplines Alaska brokers, associate brokers, and salespersons under AS 08.88, with its rules in 12 AAC 64. It has seven members: five brokers or associate brokers and two public members. It sits within the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing, sets education and exam standards, adopts regulations such as trust account rules, holds hearings, suspends or revokes licenses, and administers the Real Estate Recovery Fund.

Exam tip
Remember the split: 5 industry members plus 2 public members equals 7. A trade association or 'Board of Realtors' cannot suspend or revoke a state license; only the Commission can.
Example
A Fairbanks seller believes her salesperson kept part of a deposit. She files a complaint with the Division, investigators gather records, and the Commission decides discipline after a hearing.

1. How many members serve on the Alaska Real Estate Commission?

Answer & explanation

Answer: A. AS 08.88.011 sets the Commission at seven members. Five is tempting because five of the seats go to brokers or associate brokers, but that is a subset of the seven.
