Alabama Real Estate Commission (AREC)
The nine-member body that administers Alabama's license law (Code of Alabama Title 34, Chapter 27) and its rules in Chapter 790-X. Members are appointed by the Governor with Senate consent to five-year terms, with no more than two consecutive terms. Most seats require 10 years of Alabama residency and 10 years as a broker or salesperson; one seat is a consumer member. AREC writes rules, approves schools, issues licenses, audits offices, and disciplines licensees.
- Exam tip
- Use the memory aid 9-10-10-5-2: nine members, ten years residency, ten years experience, five-year terms, two consecutive terms maximum.
- Example
- A question asks how long an AREC member's term lasts and offers three, four, five, and six years. The answer is five years, ending September 30.
