Connecticut Real Estate Commission

The eight-member body, appointed by the Governor under §20-311a, that sets standards, hears cases, and approves courses under Chapter 392 of the General Statutes. It has three licensed brokers, two licensed salespersons, and three public members. It shares many powers with the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP), which runs the licensing office and investigations. The Commission may fine unlicensed actors up to $5,000 per violation and, after a hearing, suspend or revoke licenses or fine licensees up to $5,000 per violation.

Exam tip
'3-2-3 makes 8.' Know both penalty tracks for unlicensed activity: a civil fine up to $5,000, or criminal penalties up to $1,000 and six months.
Example
A brokerage assistant tells a caller what price she thinks the seller would accept. That is negotiating, which requires a license and exposes her to Commission fines.

1. How many members serve on the Connecticut Real Estate Commission?

Answer & explanation

Answer: C. Under §20-311a the Governor appoints eight members: three brokers, two salespersons, and three public members. Seven is a tempting guess if you forget one of the categories; count 3 + 2 + 3 = 8.
