Do-Not-Call Registry

The National Do-Not-Call Registry is a list maintained by the Federal Trade Commission of phone numbers whose owners do not want telemarketing calls. Real estate licensees making cold calls must check the registry regularly and avoid calling listed numbers unless an exemption applies, such as an existing business relationship or prior written permission. Violations can bring significant fines per call. Some states have their own lists too.

Example
An agent wants to call 200 homeowners in a neighborhood about listing. Before calling, the agent scrubs the list against the registry and removes the 45 registered numbers.
