Principal Broker and Broker-in-Charge (Hawaii)
Every Hawaii brokerage firm must have a principal broker (PB) with direct management and supervision of the firm and its licensees under HRS 467-1.6, including trust accounts, records, policies, and keeping licenses current. The PB may delegate management to brokers-in-charge (BICs) but remains responsible. If a PB will be absent more than 30 days with no other BIC registered, a temporary PB must be designated, for up to six months. Without one, the firm's licensees go on involuntary inactive status.
- Exam tip
- 'One PB, one home office, ten days to tell, thirty days to cover.' The PB stays responsible for policy even when a BIC handles daily operations.
- Example
- A principal broker leaves for a 45-day trip with no registered BIC. She must file a temporary-PB designation, or her eight salespersons go involuntarily inactive.
