North Carolina Excise Tax on Conveyances
North Carolina's tax on instruments conveying real property (G.S. 105-228.30): $1 for each $500 of consideration or fractional part, with any partial $500 rounded up. The transferor (seller) pays it to the register of deeds in the county where the property lies before the deed is recorded, and the register stamps the deed. A few counties also impose separate local land transfer taxes, but exam questions on 'the excise tax' mean the statewide rate.
- Exam tip
- Round up partial $500 units and charge the seller; the rate is $1 per $500, which equals $2 per $1,000.
- Example
- On a $275,250 sale: 551 units of $500 (rounded up) x $1 = $551 excise tax, a seller debit.
