Provisional Broker and Broker-in-Charge (North Carolina)

North Carolina has not issued salesperson licenses since 2006; every individual licensee is a broker. A newly licensed broker holds provisional status until postlicensing education is completed. A provisional broker must be supervised by a broker-in-charge (BIC) to be on active status and may be paid only through the BIC or firm. A provisional broker cannot be a BIC, a firm's qualifying broker or an independent sole proprietor. Every office offering brokerage to the public must have a BIC.

Exam tip
'Provisional broker', 'broker' and 'broker-in-charge' are statuses and designations of one broker license, not three license types.
Example
A provisional broker closes a sale; the commission must be paid to her firm, which then pays her, never directly by the client or another firm.
