Real Property Conveyance Fee (Ohio)
Ohio's real property conveyance fee works like a transfer tax and is paid when a deed is presented to the county auditor. The mandatory state-authorized portion is $0.10 per $100 of value, or 1 mill ($1 per $1,000), and a county may add a permissive fee of up to $0.30 per $100 (3 mills). The combined maximum is 4 mills, or $4 per $1,000. By statute and custom the seller (grantor) pays it, and the deed is then recorded with the county recorder.
- Exam tip
- Convert mills: 1 mill equals $1 per $1,000. When a question gives the state and county portions separately, compute each and add them.
- Example
- A $285,000 sale in a county with the full permissive fee: $285 state plus $855 county equals $1,140 in conveyance fees paid by the seller.
