Documentary Stamp Tax (Oklahoma)
Oklahoma's documentary stamp tax (68 O.S. 3201) is imposed on deeds conveying real property that is sold, at $0.75 for each $500 of consideration or fractional part of $500, which equals $1.50 per $1,000. It applies only when consideration exceeds $100, and the base excludes any lien or encumbrance that remains on the property after the sale. It is customarily paid by the seller, though the statute does not fix who pays.
- Exam tip
- Divide the price by 500 and round up to the next whole unit before multiplying by $0.75.
- Example
- A $187,250 sale is 374.5 units, rounded up to 375; 375 times $0.75 equals $281.25 in documentary stamps.
