Clients' Trust Account (Oregon)
A clients' trust account (CTA) is the federally insured Oregon account a managing principal broker must keep to hold client funds, such as earnest money, handled outside a licensed neutral escrow. The only licensee money allowed in it is earned interest and earned compensation. The principal broker must notify the bank and the Agency within 10 business days of opening or closing a CTA. Checks must be pre-numbered and say 'Clients' Trust Account,' debit cards are prohibited, and trust funds cannot be reached by the broker's creditors.
- Exam tip
- Classic one-liners: 10 business days to report opening or closing, and no debit cards on a CTA.
- Example
- A principal broker opens a CTA on Monday, March 2 and must report it to the Agency by Monday, March 16; parking $2,000 of his own money there would be commingling.
