Virginia Real Estate Board (REB)
The Virginia Real Estate Board, housed in the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), regulates brokers and salespersons under Title 54.1, Chapter 21 of the Code of Virginia and its rules at 18VAC135-20. It has nine members: seven licensees with at least seven consecutive years of active practice, at least one with property management experience, and two citizen members, serving four-year terms. Brokerage means selling, buying, leasing, or negotiating real estate for others for compensation, including dealing in contracts on two or more occasions in 12 months.
- Exam tip
- '9-7-2-4.' Test whether the person acts for another and for compensation, then check exemptions; an auctioneer is exempt only if bidding stays open 48 hours or less.
- Example
- An owner's full-time employee who shows her rental houses needs no license, but her cousin who finds tenants for a friend for $300 a lease does.
