North Carolina Real Estate Commission (NCREC)

The agency that administers North Carolina's real estate license law (G.S. Chapter 93A). Under G.S. 93A-3 it has nine members serving staggered three-year terms: seven appointed by the Governor and two by the General Assembly. At least three must be licensed brokers and at least two must be public members. NCREC licenses brokers and firms, certifies education providers, investigates complaints, holds hearings, disciplines licensees, and runs the Real Estate Education and Recovery Fund.

Exam tip
After a hearing NCREC may reprimand, censure, suspend or revoke, but it has no authority to fine; 'the Commission fined the broker $5,000' is a trap.
Example
After a hearing, NCREC suspends a broker's license for mishandling trust money; it could also reprimand or censure, but it could not impose a fine.
