range

In the rectangular (government) survey system, a range is a north-south column of townships, six miles wide, numbered east or west of a principal meridian. Range lines run north and south, parallel to the meridian, at six-mile intervals. Combined with township tiers numbered north or south of a base line, ranges allow each six-mile-square township to be identified, such as Township 3 North, Range 2 East.

Exam tip
Ranges run east-west from the principal meridian (columns); township tiers run north-south from the base line (rows). Each township is 6 miles by 6 miles, 36 square miles.
Example
"T2N, R4W" identifies the township in the second tier north of the base line and the fourth range west of the principal meridian.
