Department of Licensing Director and Real Estate Commission (Washington)
In Washington the Department of Licensing (DOL) administers real estate licensing under RCW 18.85, 18.86, and 18.235, and its director holds the real power: adopting rules, issuing and denying licenses, holding hearings, and imposing discipline, with the commission's advice. The Real Estate Commission is advisory. It consists of the director as chair plus six governor-appointed members serving six-year terms, at least two from each side of the Cascades, each with five years of Washington brokerage experience or three years of investigative work. It meets four times a year.
- Exam tip
- 'The Director Decides, the Commission Counsels.' Questions asking who issues licenses, adopts rules, or disciplines want the director, not the commission. Memory aid: '6-6-2-2-5-4.'
- Example
- A broker hears 'the commission revoked' a colleague's license; technically the director, using RCW 18.235 procedures, imposed the discipline.
