area

Area is the size of a flat, two-dimensional surface, measured in square units such as square feet or square yards. For a rectangle, area equals length times width; for a triangle, area equals one-half base times height. Irregular lots or floor plans are often divided into rectangles and triangles, then added together. Area calculations are used for lot sizes, living space, flooring, and price per square foot.

Exam tip
Convert all measurements to the same units first. There are 9 square feet in a square yard and 43,560 square feet in an acre.
Example
A lot 100 feet wide and 150 feet deep has an area of 15,000 square feet, about 0.34 acre.
