cubic volume
Cubic volume is the amount of three-dimensional space inside a structure or container, calculated for a rectangular space by multiplying length by width by height. Results are expressed in cubic units such as cubic feet or cubic yards; one cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Volume calculations appear in exam questions about warehouse space, concrete, excavation, or heating and cooling capacity.
- Exam tip
- To convert cubic feet to cubic yards divide by 27, not 9 (9 is for square yards). Make sure all dimensions are in the same units first.
- Example
- A slab 30 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 0.5 feet thick contains 300 cubic feet of concrete, or about 11.1 cubic yards.
